I had a strange experience and hope some of the mechanics on this forum will please offer some insight. Heres a breakdown; Purchased a used 2017 Latitude in Jan,2018 (mileage at 17K) Got an oil change at dealer on Dec. 2018 (mileage at 21K) Around Sept. 2019, I started noticing a strong burnt odor if I drove my Jeep further than 20 miles.(every time) Nov.2019, got an oil change at a local mechanic shop. (mileage at 25k) After change burnt smell there, but not as strong. ( drove it two consecutive long drives to check it out >60RT both times) When I picked up my Jeep I was asked if I ever had the oil changed in 25000 miles. As he claimed the oil was very dirty. Now my Dad was a mechanic, I don't claim to know a great deal, but I check my levels and actually look at the color and check for odor and look for foamy residue which would indicate coolant getting into the engine. None of these issues, apart from the strong burnt smell, did I notice. My main question would be, could the dealer that performed my first oil change , put in non-synthetic oil, instead of full synthetic oil as specified? Would that have caused my oil to be dirty, as the shop claimed? This burnt smell is concerning me, and the fact that my oil change only was good for 4000 miles. I only drive a short commute, I don't abuse my engine. And I am concerned, since this vehicle was used, that I may have a bigger problem. I would appreciate any input, and if there is anything on my own that I should look for, or keep an eye on.
IF the dealer used the correct viscosity oil (0W20), you got synthetic. anything 5W anything or less is synthetic. You were getting your changed in less then 5000 miles, you are doing everything correct. I believe that the Jeep Renegade's recommended oil change is every 9000 miles (I do mine every 5k) or annual which ever comes first. The bigger question is, DID the dealer actually change your oil? I would look for a small oil leak near the exhaust if you are smelling burnt oil. Oil filter leaking oil would get on the exhaust while driving, even if it were only an occasional drip.
The burnt smell was definitely coming from the engine bay. I also wondered if my oil was changed by the dealer, or if the wroing oil was used. Say 5w40 was used as opposed to the 0W20. Would that cause my oil to look older? I just want to make sure, the dealer didn't set me up for engine failure. I have looked around in the engine for any leaks, I haven't gotten underneath it yet to check.
perhaps I’m old fashioned, but I always check that dipstick after an oil change and/or at refueling. I don’t trust anyone but myself these days good input, Ed!
I guess you didn't read my post all the way through. You decided to post a response that was based on antiquated ideology and kneejerk assumptions. I suggest you reread my entire post.
I’m confused, how was my post antiquated? it was meant in all fairness, not particularly directed at you either as many people read this forum and may experience monkey business from dealers/mechanics. nothing I said was condescending and I’m sorry if you took it that way :S I have found from my own experience with a simple task of changing oil, for as simple of a car as our renegade can be, the results afterwards warrant my checking of the dipstick to verify as much as I can. these fools at my local jiffy lube copied information from the previous visit on the paperwork so god knows what they actually did. just my two cents- [edit] Ed was referring to the user @IDoMy0wnRacing .. in case that was misinterpreted too.
As I stated before, I do check my oil regularly it clearly states this in my second paragraph. My question was posted BECAUSE I feel the oil change mileage was not extreme, since the manual states a 7500 mile change schedule. I was looking for input/feedback from a mechanic or someone who may have experienced something similar. You really have added nothing to this thread for me, since I already am doing everything as I should in reference to maintaining /checking my Jeep.
