Hello.. Thought I would make a post about tires... attached are a few pics and before and after comparison. A little background... I have had my TH off road many times, I search out and find abandoned towns and mining camps in the Nevada desert as well as took a 9,000 mile cross country road trip last summer, so Ive really put the TH through its paces. Many different pavements, soils, rocks etc and even off trail in some of the outback areas. I did all of that on the Goodyears. They performed fairly well with the various terrains. After 31,000 miles on them I really wanted a meatier tire for the off road excursions I go on, and found the BFG in 225-65-17. I searched this and another forum looking for info and found everything from you need a lift and spacers to itll fit fine without them. I had them installed this morning with no lift and no spacers. I did not notice a drop in take off speed (lets be honest the renys are not speed demons anyway) but no noticeable drop in power. No noticeable increase in cabin noise (drove highway speeds, off road and beat up two lane road). No rubs that I could tell on the fender or suspension. It does drive differently, more like a truck/Jeep than a car that happens to have 4 wheel drive. Once I took it off road, the tires really shined. The trail I hit has sand, rock, a dry lake bed a few hills to climb etc. So I gave them a work out. I could tell the difference immediately between the tires and found better grip, better ride and of course the TH really is awesome off road, but with these tires... super awesome off road. IMO and for TH the BFG Ko2 in 225/65/17 work great without spacers or a lift... (though Ill be getting both soon just to sit a little taller and wider.)

Thought you post was very helpful. I myself have this set up and it worked great, did find other tires not as aggressive looking. Went with BF T/A KO, bought in TireRack size 225/65/17. Felt like I could have made a 225/70/17 fit, kuhmo or maxxix tire, but I was risking it, plus not so exited about lift kits because space between spring cup of the strut doesn't change. The spacer at the wheel does give you that extra space. I have Rugged Ridge Spacers "gives it a nice look and stance". No rubbing and no cornering issues. No trimming required. Original Trailhawk wheels. I do have front sway bar disconnected for better ride comfort. Planning to change crappy traction bar links (they are plastic) for a set of Mevotech parts (good old metal links).

    Happy Trails!

Do you think I can put the same size (225/65R17 KO2) on the Limited ?
The Limited comes with 225/55R18 stock

    Size Diameter Width
    225/65R17 28.5" 8.9"
    225/55R18 l27.7" 8.9"

KO2 has same width, just a bit larger in diameter, the rear should have no problem. It's the front that I'm little worried about.

    Thank you.

I don't have a limited so I'm going to have to give you the process.

Because the widths are the same it's easy for you to check. The difference in contact points to the base of the strut or to the dimple inside the fender well which covers the weld seam is going to be half of the difference in diameters between the two tire sizes. You do know you would in the case you cited above need to get new rims.

The delta between tire sizes is .800" half of that is the distance, .400" is the amount the edge of the tire is going to move closer to the strut and closer to the dimple.

This is how I would test it. Get a stack of printer paper that is .400" thick. if you don't have any calipers to measure the exact thickness, build a stack of paper that is 25/64 tall then add one more sheet.

Now take this stack of paper and lay it on top of your tread of your existing tire to simulate where the tire surface would be with the new KO2 tires. Do this at the point of the strut clearance and again where the dimple is inside the tire well. Look to see that you have enough gap remaining. for the strut the front tire should be straight. For the dimple you should turn the steering wheel to where the wheel comes in closest proximity to the dimple. With the paper layed over the tire tread you should have a 1/4" on top and a little more than 1/4 on the side where the dimple is.

    hope this helps.

Thank you very much Mr. AZ. Your detailed explanation for size checking just helped me made up my mind that I should just call America Tires and let them figure it out for me.

I have a 2017 Renegade Trailhawk with stock Falken Wildpeak H/T, 215/65R17 tires.

Last weekend I wanted to see how the. Car would handle snow. On an unplowed section of the Old Donnor Pass Road up by Tahoe with about 1 to 1.5 ft of lightly packed and fresh snow I got stuck. Part of th problem was that there was not enough room to turn around and had to back up to get back to the plowed section of the road. I managed to get it free with some help pushing , but it would fishtail back into a drift when backing it up. Had to call tow truck to pull me out.

So looking at various forums, its clear I need better tires for these sort of snow conditions.

The question is get true snow tires and swap them in the spring or alll terrain and leave them on all the time.

The BFG K02’s 225/54R 17 with the snowflake rating seem to be a pretty good compromise and they will fit without any other mods. I’m assuming they will also fit on my current rims.

The question is how good are they in snow and how noisy are they on the road?

i don't have BFGs on my TH yet, but all of our plow trucks at work have them, and my old work truck had them. they work great in winter conditions, i'm in northern Ontario, and we get lots of snow and ice and extreme cold (-40c). now a true dedicated winter tire will do better, but the ko2 will hold its own.
as for noise, yes, more than your average all season, but about the same as most any AT tire. it's not unbarable.
as for fitting your stock TH rims, should be no issue at all. I have a 2017 TH with stock 17" rims, and currently have 225/65R17 Nokian Hakkapileta studded winter tires and still have a fair amount of clearance left.

What size spacers are you running? Would you choose a different size if you had it to do over?

Is there any size spacer that would cause rubbing with the 225/65/17 KO2's, on stock TH wheels, no lift?

Thanks for your awesome post! It definitely helped me out a lot picking tires. Right after reading this post i called my 4x4 mechanic and ordered these tires. I’m so excited to get them put on. I also ordered 1” spacers :)

I used the Rugged Ridge spacers for the Jeep Renegade. I believe its a 1.25 inch spacer. The wheel spacer gives good clearance from the strud base. I have had no issues with them. When the tire is full turn all the way. There is just an ever so slightly rub on the plastic. Since then, I also decided to install the Teraflex lift kit. Actually fits very nicely and gives it a great stance. The lift kit does not really do anything to fit a “bigger tire”. It does increase ground clearance more than anything. Also, the ATP coil springs are catching my eye

I just got a set of Pirelli All Terrain Plus 225/65R17 installed today. I was back and forth between them and the BFG KO2s. The BFGs are definitely more aggressive looking and will perform better off road but I don't plan on doing much off road and being that it's my daily driver I couldn't justify the added weight, loss of mpgs & treadlife. Not to mention the BFGs would have been about $300 more. Anyway, so far so good and it fits and looks perfect on my TH.

I've attached some pics. Side by side BFGs & Pirellis and then my before and after pics.

Does the stock Trail Hawks have more room in the wheel wells than the Latitude models?

Just wondering if the 225/65R17 tires would fit on my stock 2017 Latitude 4x4 that currently had 215/60R17 tires on it.

    Thanks

The Trailhawk has .8 inches more lift then your Latitude.
Yes, the 225/65R17 tires will fit.
    215/65R17 = 28 inch tire
    225/65R17 = 28.5 inch tire

So theses will fit stock with out any mods at all? I don’t even need a pinch seem mod? Even if I turn the wheel the farthest it can go it still won’t rub?

You might get an occasional scuff at, or near full turn and hit a bump or starting up a steep driveway (at, or near full turn).
