This my write-up for the AVID AERO Snorkel Renegade Cold Ari Intake sold by Avid Essentials.

Mine is the 1.4L turbo model jeep renegade.

Here is what comes in the kit.

You have the snorkel, a paper template, a bag of hardware, an elbow tube, a replacement bracket, and a silicon connecting pipe.

You will need some hand tools and I chose to use a couple power tools as well.

    I used a phillips and a flathead screw driver, a 10mm and a 13mm wrench, a pop rivet gun, a #4 allen wrench, a drill and a jigsaw.

First I removed the spongy plastic foam part filling the gap between the engine bay and the front right fender.
    IMG_20180210_104801.jpg IMG_20180210_105008.jpg IMG_20180210_105426.jpg IMG_20180210_105435.jpg
Pry the center of the plastic clips and then remove the center part. There are three plastic clips to remove then you can remove the foam piece.

    * You could also remove the right front wheel and inner fender guard, but I was able to do everything from above *

Next I removed the factory air box.

You will need to remove the air intake tube going to the engine as well as the vapor return lines. I had to cut the metal retainer on the air intake tube and replace it later with a normal hose clamp. You need to squeze the two white clips on each return line and pull off of the air box. With the top half removed, simply pull up on the side of the air box closest to the engine. Then pull away from the right fender. It should now be able to lift out.

With the factory air box removed, now you have to remove the factory cold air intake.

Remove the 10mm bolt holding the tube in place. It is located at the front of the tube.

Now there is a bracket that will be replaced by the one provided with the kit.It is located at the front of the inside of the right fender.
    IMG_20180210_112712.jpg IMG_20180210_113956.jpg
Remove the four bolts holding it in place. The horn is also mounted to this bracket and there is a bundle of wires held with a plastic clip. Pull the clip out and remove the horn assembly

Re-install the provided bracket and re-install the horn assembly.
    IMG_20180210_114424.jpg IMG_20180210_115203.jpg IMG_20180210_115225.jpg
You can see the new bracket has room for the elbow tube.

Now we can cut the hole for the snorkel.
    IMG_20180210_121732.jpg IMG_20180210_121948.jpg IMG_20180210_123635.jpg
I taped the paper template in place, drilled the three holes for the bolts and cut the big circle out of the paper. Then I used my jigsaw to cut out the main hole for the snorkel. Be careful not to cut the bundle of wires behind the fender.

I test fit the snorkel to line up the spot for the upper bracket. Two pop rivets are proved in the bag of hardware.

I forget to take better pictures during this step. Once the pop rivets are in place, you can test fit the snorkel and the bolts.

For the final assembly, I had to start back at the factory air box.
    IMG_20180210_141651.jpg IMG_20180210_142453.jpg IMG_20180210_142812.jpg
With the elbow tube in place I re-installed the bottom of the factory air box and fit the elbow tube to the front of it. Then you can install the silicon connecting pipe to the elbow. Make sure both hose clamps are on the tube.

Then you have to work the snorkel into place and onto the connecting tube at the same time.
    IMG_20180210_140734.jpg IMG_20180210_140001.jpg IMG_20180210_135541.jpg
With the tubes in place, tighten all the bolts and hose clamps. Also replace the top of the factory air box re-attaching the intake pipe to the engine and the vapor return lines.

Now replace the foam piece between the engine bay and the fender and you're all set.

I couldn't be happier with this kit. Everything fit correctly and it looks amazing.

Did you do anything specific to treat or protect the bare metal edges exposed when you cut into the sheet metal? It takes a braver man than me to take a Skil saw to fresh sheetmetal! Nice write-up.

I am planning on hitting the areas with some paint once it gets warming. I did this when it was about 20° Fahrenheit.

Do you notice better gas mileage or more power or better overall engine performance?

Not really. Now is not a good test because the outside temperature keeps fluctuating. Another variable is the snorkel acts like an echo chamber for the intake noise. So I keep flooring the throttle just to hear the vwooshing sound.

Thanks for the write up, it looks good. I've been wanting one but don't want to pay to have it installed. Seeing you do it gives me confidence I can.

Awesome job, thanks for the write-up. With that being said, how long did this install take start-finish?

I didn't do it all at one time. Probably about 1-2 hours all together.

Anyone know if this is CA smog legal?

Edit: The folks at Avid got back to me. The snorkels are CA legal! :D

I just finished up my instal. Everything fit amazing and looks great!! I love the fact you can't see it from inside the vehicle plus no added drag!! The only tips I can give to make the instal easier is use a center punch for the bolt holes. I did not and my drill bit "walked" just a bit and the holes didn't line up with the snorkel so i used a step down bit to open them up and it worked great. This is seriously the best looking snorkel on the market!

Thanks for the write up! I’m hoping to order one of these within the next few weeks and your write up gives me a heads up on what’s involved. Much obliged!
