The 2.4 is essentially the same motor as what comes in a Dodge Dart. These motors have been reliably tuned to upwards of 290HP. Is it worth it? That's for each person to decide on their own. Personally - not on a Renegade that I am mostly using for a daily and some trail riding. The 1.4 came with a turbo for free
Believe me, I would love to see someone do this. I’m sure it would be amazing. I didn’t pick that motor because I simply have an irrational rejection of automatic transmissions. If you are looking at HOW to do it, the Dodge Dart forums would be a good place to start. My experience with the 1.4t (also available in the Dodge Dart) has taught me that if a part says it fits the engine in the Dart, it will fit the same engine in the Renegade. But that only applies to pieces that attach directly to the engine. The further out you go, the less engine specific things are and the more vehicle specific things get. Also, putting a turbo on an engine that didn't come with one is a major undertaking. There is a kit for the Dart that cost more than $4K. My 5 year plan includes the upgraded turbo available for the Fiat 500 Abarth/Dodge Dart. I would love to compare notes about the cost/benefit ratio of these two options.
in a perfect world , the trailhawk would be a 3.0L diesel with a 6spd mt, real lockers, and more wheel well space.
I am in way over my head wanting to turbocharge my Renegade. If I do it I'll let y'all know how it goes and post videos on YouTube... Road Race Motorsports sells that Dart kit which supposedly fits a Renegade. I'm highly considering it, but I'm concerned about a few things. Although the Dart and Renegade both have the 2.4L Tigershark engine, I am unaware of any small differences that might come into play--or rather get in the way--when installing the turbo intended for a Dart. Clearance will probably be the biggest issue, although RRM claims the kit will fit my Renegade. They have apparently done it before... With how much improvisation, though, I don't know. Secondly, there is a lot that this "comprehensive" kit is missing. I would at least want to upgrade the fuel pump, injectors, and spark plugs to make it "safe". Not to mention that it does not include a wastegate (that I know of?) or blow-off valve. I'm not trying to blow up my car. This is my daily driver... Thirdly, cooling is going to be an issue. The kit's description does not specify if the intercooler (another big hunk of metal that might not fit...) is air-to-air or air-to-water. The description also doesn't specify if the turbo is perhaps even oil-cooled... If for any reason this specific turbo needs to tap into the car's oil, that's going to be a huge roadblock. This would require me to remove the oil pan and drill a hole in it. That would be a huge feat since... Oh, yes, did I mention I can't hoist the engine out of my car? Yeah. I'm REALLY in way over my head. This is happening in a covered driveway. I need to figure all of this out before I drop $5000+ on the kit and additional parts. Please help :3
Welcome to the forum. There is a member here who has done a turbo on his Trailhawk. He is extremely knowledgeable about the Renegade and vehicles in general. I can't help but offer good luck to you, keep us posted.
Thank you for a warm welcome! Would you kindly direct me to a thread of his so I can read up and possibly contact him?
Here is his thread on the turbo. https://www.toasterjeep.com/index.php?threads/im-at-it-again-turbocharged-tigershark-2-4l.3029/
