A lot more. 245/70R16 is a 29.5 inch tire. 4 inch lift, Pinch weld modification, and 1 inch spacers (no larger of a spacer) for a 29.5 inch tire. 225/70R16 (28.4 inch tire) would fit with the setup that you are asking about. 2 inch lift and spacers are maxed out with a 28.5 inch tire.
Then why does my lift kit say that the recommended tire for no rubbing is a 235/65R17. A 245/70R16 is only a half inch taller.
There are a lot of things that come into play, some that don't move in relation to the tire, and some that do. The spring bucket on the shock is one that doesn't, you can fit a 29" (235/65r17) tire in with no spacer under the spring bucket, a 245/70r16 is actually a 30" tire, but even a 29.5" won't fit under the spring bucket without a spacer. Here's a shot straight across the top of my 235/65r17 (29") looking at the strut; You can't fit another half inch in there without a spacer, You can put a bigger tire in with a spacer, getting the tire away from the bucket, But with a spacer you increase the sweep of the tire's arc when turning, and a 29" will hit on the back of the inner fender. So when they tell you you can fit a 235/65r17 in there, they really do mean that's the absolute biggest tire with no other mods to the jeep., and when you do other mods, you have to consider the other things it changes to. Mine actually does have 1.25" spacers, I did a mild Pinch seam mod (Trimmed about a half inch) and it still rubs because of the increased arc; And that's with an Avid 2.5 inch lift;
yup! very well said, @zuke ! solo city driving mine is fine sitting at around 4” of lift with a 30.5” tire & 1.5” spacers. now, get the jeep loaded up with the family, the thule box & camping gear on a windy mountain road I discovered I rub on all four tires lol Follow the specs that @IDoMy0wnRacing posted above.. the safest way to go
