Looking to get tires at the beginning of the summer, and id like some of you guys' input on the need to go to a 16" wheel/tire set for the TH. I see that most people are running 65/17 and 75/16 so I get that the sidewall will be taller, but I don't plan on doing any hardcore wheeling. Just playing around some on the weekends, but I do plan on installing the DayStar lift as well.

Anybody know the weight difference between stock TH wheels with KO2s versus some steel 16s like WayaLife has with the Coppers on them? I really like the Coopers better, and they cant be had for my 17" wheels.

I guess for me Im just not finding enough reason to justify the cost of a whole new set of wheels, plus the necessary spacers just for me to play around on some mild trails. If the articulation of the Renegade was more, I could see more of a benefit of being able to tuck the 16s into the wheelwell. Keep in mind this little TH is my daily driver as well, and easily racks up 12-15K a year.

If im missing anything, let me know. Thanks!

Stock KO2 tires alone are 20kg (44 lbs each for the 265/65/17 size you would fit on your stock TH rims.

I know the factory TH tires are about 20-25 lbs max each. So it's almost doubling the tire weight.

Going into the 16" AT tire is going to be much heavier than stock, but probably not much more than the KO2, depending upon which brand you go. Some other brands are much lighter than the KO2s

I did this for the tires, don't know the wheel weight differences.

I get that. Im just wondering how much the difference would be between my stock 17" wheels and tires versus steel 16" wheels + the Discoverers.

Thanks for that, where did you get the weight info? Id like to see how the coopers compare in weight to the rest of them. Wish the Coopers were just made in a 17 that would fit our Renegades.

Thanks, im having a hard time finding a weight anywhere on the Coopers. Have checked their website and TireRack, as well as a few other places online. I did find the listed weight of the 225/65/17 KO2s to be 38.9lbs. That same tire in the size of the Coopers was around 42lbs, so it looks like the 17" tires will be lighter because of the shorter sidewall.

Now I wonder how the weight of the factory(aluminum?) wheels stacks up against steel 16" wheels for the whole package.

Not sure what the weight of the stock aluminum is, but a wheel such as this (16x8) Pro Comp Rock Krawler Series 98 is 18 lbs each.

I'm assuming other steel wheels will be similar weight... And more than the stock aluminums.

Just found info on a set of 17x8 rubicon rims for the JK (Moab style). I'm assuming they should be slightly heavier than our TH rims, but they run 22 lbs each.

Thanks a lot for digging up that info. Sounds like even going to 16" wheels and taller tires will weigh more at each corner than the stock wheels + the KO2s. And save money in the process, that can be used for other things(like the lift!). This is a daily driver, so im just thinking about longterm drivetrain wear with the added weight.

Yeah I've been fighting with the same dilemma. I'm thinking of waiting until I can get a 16" rims with the proper offset so I don't have to run spacers. Until then, the stock rims don't look back on the TH. And KO2 tires are a nice balance between behaving on-road and still capable off-road.

Yea, I don't mind the look of the stock wheels at all. But I definitely wont put the KO2s on my stockers and then do 16" wheels later. So I need to decide before I pull the trigger on either one.

Edited to add: am I correct in thinking that the ground clearance would be similar between the stock wheels with KO2s and the 16" wheels with a 1-2 size bigger sidewall? Im fairly certain that the stock wheels + KO2s and the DayStar lift will be aggressive enough for anything im going to throw at it.

Cooper STT Pro 225/75/16s that wayalife has are 29.5" overall height.

BFG KO2 225/65/17s that fit on the stock rims are 28.5" overall height.

That means the 16" rims and those tires would get you 1/2" more height than the KO2s - and you will have to trim the pinch seams to get that extra 1/2".

So... I think it's more of what look you are going for and which tire you prefer.

Only reason I went with 16's is because 17's had no mud terrain tires, and these toasters just look so cool with MT's. :)

Awesome, thanks for those numbers side by side. Since I don't plan on hardcore wheeling this thing, and I would prefer not to have to do any cutting(at this time anyway), looks like ill be going with the KO2s on my stock wheels. Any more word on the 245/65R/17 size KO2 fitting with the lift kit? I saw on one thread here where a company(I believe it was Rebel Offroad) has them on a lifted TH with stock wheels and spacers and claimed that they had no rubbing.

I have been researching the crap out of this. Discount Tire, Tire Rack both say that I can put 235/60/17 on my stock TH rims. I have narrowed it down to Firestone Destination LE2's. They will fit, easy rolling and better stopping then Michelin's, better rolling resistance and stopping than BFG LongTrail. As soon as I get them, Ill post pics and reviews.

For my own benefit and education. Why go for smaller rim/tire size? What are the gains by doing so?

I have 18" on my DOJ

There is a wider selection of tires to put on the 16 inch compared to the 17 inch wheels that will fit on the Renegade.
