Took the Jeep on the beach down in Corolla, NC earlier this month and, while it handled it fine, with it in Sand Mode and locked in 4HI the traction control wouldn't let it go much above 3000 rpm and wouldn't upshift no matter how much throttle you gave it. We're going back this week and I was just curious if putting it in manual mode will let me select my own gear in those conditions? The beach can be pretty long down there and I'm just not sure how well the cooling system is gonna handle a steady 3000 rpm under that load if I go all the way to the end. We only went about 5mins down last time. I know some cars in manual mode will let you blow it up if you want while others are all but useless. If I could get it down around 2500rpm or less while cruising at speed I'd feel more comfortable. I know it's gonna hold a lower gear to get me going but once I got some momentum going it seems a little unnecessary.

I believe the traction control is shut off when in sand mode. Did you try shutting off the esc? You can shut it off by holding the esc button (back right corner of shift console) for more than 5 seconds. That may help. Sand mode starts in 2nd gear. I would try using the auto stick feature to shift gears. Like you said, keep your eye on the temp.

Yeah I'm good with the 2nd gear start. It handled the loose start great. But it was really annoying being stuck at one speed once we got going. A huge storm rolled in out of nowhere and people were blowing by us or riding right up our backsides. I'll try that ESC trick next time.

Got back at it again today. It was still revving like crazy in 4HI in sand mode but when I put it in manual mode I was able to pick whatever gear I want. Cruised down the beach around 20mph comfortably under 2000rpm. Only aired down to 25psi this time and the Renny didn't bat an eye. Never bogged down or spun a tire. Even on the really loose dune you have to climb to get on the beach. After 2 beach trips I'm really impressed with how easily it handles soft packed sand.

I know this is an old tread but, sand mode revs really high and it bangs really hard when it does shift. I hate it I leave it in auto and lock and I do not have any problems up shifts and down shifts when it should and makes sand driving way more enjoyable. I also manually take off traction control off and the esc
