Looking for advice on my new 2017 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk eating massive amounts of oil.

only have 1700 miles already 1.5 Quarts low!!!

Should I start with a call to FCA?

Do I need to take it to the purchase dealership or can I use my local dealership?

I have heard that FCA will not even start an Oil consumption case until 5K on the clock, do you all recommend waiting?

    Thanks

I would get it documented now. But there are lots of folks saying alot of oil use is "normal" on a brand new Renegade. Not sure I buy it, but you have lots of warranty remaining, so I would keep a close eye on the oil level going forward (carry an extra quart with you), and give it till 5000 miles before I got serious about seeing if there was a real problem.

    Hello CaliShaver,

I agree with CNJ it would be best to follow up with a dealer with this concern to ensure everything is ok with your vehicle.
Please keep us updated on that visit. If we can be of any assistance, send us a direct message. We'd be glad to help.

I'm ashamed to admit that, after 6,000 miles of waiting for my oil change light to come on, I decided to give the condition of the oil a look. I was shocked to find my 2017 TH also a quart and a half low! I didn't think it would be possible for a new engine to lose this much oil. There are no obvious signs of leak or burning, so I'm starting to suspect it was never filled properly to begin with. I'll be keeping a very close eye on it, now.

Well its really a shame that new cars are engineered for fuel economy over all else. The things I'm reading are that the already undersized rings were installed backwards on a large percentage of engines. Overall for my purpose (which is an hour commute from sea level to 5000ft elevation once or twice a week through some steep grades which may have snow) I'm super satisfied with the trailhawk renegade. I just hope that fca will stand behind their product.

I don't think you should be that ashamed why would you even think that you would have an issue with a new car?

So did you put in some make up oil or are you going to get the oil changed and start an excessive consumption case?

I'll have to say that waiting 6,000 miles to check your oil isn't a very good idea, to put it very mildly.
Guys, please check your oil every other fill-up, or AT LEAST every 1,000 miles. The dipstick is there for a very good reason. Please don't rely on a warning light to tell you your oil is low, when that system may fail to do its job due to a faulty sensor or some other reason.
That said, I would also get the issue documented at your dealer now, do an oil and filter change (pull the dipstick to check the level), and keep an eye on it going forward. As the oil was apparently never checked, your Rennie may not have been filled correctly at the get-go, or perhaps that oil was burned off in the first 3,000 miles during a break-in period, and any oil consumption may have stabilized by now.

One thing you need to do when you get your oil changed is to check your invoice to see how much and what type of oil was used. One oil change I had at the dealer said they put 4 quarts of oil in my Renegade. My 2.4l takes 5.5 quarts, the 1.4l engine take 4 quarts. They used the right oil type but only put in the amount for the 1.4l. After reviewing my invoice at home, I went out and checked the oil, very low. Went back to the dealer (2 miles) and they filled it up. I now check my invoice as soon as they hand it to me and check my oil as soon as I get home.

Right? I mean, I've read about issues with the 9-speed, but never this one before.
I topped it off and will monitor it, closely, from here on out.

I am just over 3,000 miles and was a little less than a quart low. At purchase, the dealership told me not to worry about the oil and come in just before 10,000 for the first oil change. I guess they should tweak their advice a little ;-)

I want to thank everyone on these forums for talking about their oil issues, it sparked me to check it out; I wouldn't have thought much of it otherwise because my last 4 -5 commuter vehicles didn't use hardly, if any oil between changes.
On the other hand, the FORD E-450 does use oil and recommends you check every 2-3 fillups. That is a big arse motor that hauls the RV around, so I can see why it uses a little oil. Basically, I will treat the Jeep like the E-450 Van/Motorhome chasis until it breaks in more and stops using oil.

I feel like these forums helped me dodge a potential bullet with either warantee coverage disputes or at the minimum some minor damage that shows up later from running on low oil during the early years. I can't thank you all enough! The BU community here is great!
