    Hey fellow forum members,

Just wanted everyone to know about my issues so that maybe others who have not yet purchased a renegade can stay far away from this product and unfortunately to those who already own this gem of a vehicle maybe some insight on what and how to proceed with your dealership.

First off let me start buy saying my buying experience at the dealership was terrible...they screwed up my credit report due to sales staff not copying down my correct address off my license to then getting denied from jeep for a credit app. after finally realizing what the sale person had done i informed him that was not my correct address then was able to obtain a 6.9% interest rate from a lender which was high compared to the Toyota i had bought 6 months ago with a 2.9% interest rate.....anyways water under the bridge i was happy to be in my renegade.

Issues: I told myself to forget about the shitty financing and move on even tho im showing 5 hard inquires from the one dealership i bought it from( my understanding is those are all lumped together so it does not affect your credit too much) anyways! My complaint is no one told me at the dealership when i bought it that and oil change for my renegade is $90 bucks! no free first oil change or incentives considering i bought it from them....lame. SO here comes the interesting part.....due to the fact that i would never let someone change my oil for 90 bucks i find that absolutely absurd as i can go to my local oreilys and purchase the filter and 4 quarts of fully synthetic oil myself for 31.99! So i have just under 15,000 ( i believe its 14,734 at the moment) and due for my third oil change. back story i brought the jeep into the dealership to have them look at a few things which not one item was addresses or fixed but was kindly told i had no oil on my dipstick!!!!!!! and when i left jeep still didn't put any oil to make sure i would get it home safe! moving on to today 1000 miles since i last had it at the dealership i have filled the engine with 2 more quarts of oil and drove it for 750miles and im showing a loss of 1.5 quarts!

How does a modern engine lose that much oil or burn it? Talked with the dealership and they seem to consider this a normal occurrence and have said we have replaced engines in the renegade due to the "INCORRECT PISTON RING SIZE!" WTF!!!!!!!!! My car has under 15,000 miles and its need a whole new motor? Jeep will cover it after a oil consumption test but of course have to pay them $90 bucks so that they can preform the oil change!!!

My issue with all of this is A. what a piece of shit this vehicle is. B. Why is Jeep not warning consumers about this problem? would they just rather us not check are oil and blow up the motor? I talked with a acquaintance at the dealership about this issue and he said its a common thing and we have done many engine swaps.

My problem is i dont want a vehicle with less than 15,000 miles to have a replacement engine in it......wont that absolutely kill my resale value? as if my renegade has not dropped enough right off the lot. Also what are my buy back options as i would really like to get rid of this vehicle while its still is relatively new...not thrilled regardless if i wanted a car that ate oil i would have just bout a Subaru. Hoping someone might have a few insightful ideas, also i will keep this updated as i plan to bring the jeep in for a dealership oil change in 300 miles so we shall see.

Thanks for reading my sob story i just want others to be aware of oil consumption and the lack of effort on jeeps part. I choose to buy a new jeep as i had other new cars with small issues but in comparison i wish i had never gotten into this jeep!

    Have a good day everyone!

The $90 oil change isn’t shocking to me. For the euro syn oil it requires and the labor that’s relatively cheap. My Passat took the same oil and it’s changes at the dealer were $130+. This oil is rated for 10,000 miles so you really can go longer on your changes. Consumption wise it shouldn’t be burning that fast. Are you sure there isn’t a leak? Regardless it will be covered under warranty. Sounds like you have a shitty dealer so go to a different one. And resale value on Renegades is actually one of the best. They have one of the slowest depreciating percentages so I’d say don’t worry about that and get the engine swapped under warranty. Shoulda just went for the 2.4.

Let me say I would have no problems paying 90 dollars for an oil change if it lasted 10,xxx miles. Problem is I'm losing about a quart every 1000 miles and my engine only takes 4 quarts to fill so if you do that math I can't even make it to the 5000 mile interval to change it with out adding a lot of oil....and also I have no leaks or specs of oil underneath. Also the 2.4 is known to eat oil just as bad as the 1.4s so keep an eye on your oil level aswell

I agree with njolsen. The bulk of your problems are the shitty dealer. I’d contact fca and tell them how you’re being treated.

In the meantime, go to a different dealership.

I had purchased a new Subaru Forester ('14 I think), which drank 1qt/2000 miles from day 1. Subie wouldn't do anything about it unless it drank 1qt/1300 miles (verified by dealer inspection about every other mile...)

My new 17 2.4L Latitude was right at the bottom of the marks on the dipstick @ 5,000 miles, but don't really remember where it was when new. Just had my 1st oil change a couple weeks ago, so I'm going to keep an eye on it.

My guess is automakers run the lowest tension piston rings as possible for less drag/higher fuel mileage, so they will use up some oil.

"80's muscle car"? I'm guessing I'm a little older than you.;)

I'll post again in a few thousand miles to give an update. (might be a while though. Almost time to get the Camaro out of the barn.:))

I know all the 60s and 70s cars are the amazing ones we all remember but I was referring to the late model 70s early 80s mustangs that ate a quart of oil every 1000 miles....i probably should change the title tho....probably be getting into the dealer this week for the oil change then who knows but will update when they let me know about a new engine

    I also have a 2.4.
I’ve gone through over 5 quarts in 7500 miles/11 months with 50% of the miles from 3 road trips.
During my oil consumption reading from the dealer yesterday we found the source of the leak.
A new oil sensor switch was installed this morning by the dealer. Hopefully this will stop the lose.
If you aren’t already check your oil every fill up. Once it gets to over 1.5 quarts low the motor will start stalling while turning.

Get it to the dealer and get it all documented. After verifying the issue with the dealer JeepCares offered me a 2 year service contract for free oil changes.

My Jeep Renegade 1.4L Turbo is having the SAME issue. They're wanting to replace the engine and that'd be 8K plus tax. When I asked why that was happening they gave me a good ol' "we'd have to take off the engine and we'd be able to tell you halfway but that would be extra labour that you probably wouldn't wanna pay for".

I've read that many people have had high oil consumption issues with the 2.4L Tigershark engine but not many with the 1.4L Turbo engine. In fact, the car has shut down while driving! Somewhere I read that it's a FIAT engine in the end and they are known for being oil guzzlers but Jeep usually doesn't take care of the problem and dismisses as "normal" !!!

Did Jeep cover your incorrect piston size repair? If so, was it because you had an extended warranty? My dealership is just wanting me to spend 8K and me and the hub sure are raising our eyebrows...
