My spare tire kit arrived yesterday (Mopar P/N: 8221 4679 AC) and thought I'd share how it went.

The full kit arrived as advertised on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/RENEGADE-EME...49304&sr=8-1&keywords=spare+tire+kit+renegade

(This kits was built the same month and year as my Renegade ... it should have just come with it to start with)

    1) Unpack the kit and make sure all the parts are there: Tire, Jack, Tire Iron, small Screw driver, Strap, Molded Foam blocks to hold jack parts, and zippered bag to hold foam blocks.

    2) Remove cargo shelf, and lower liner to expose cargo tray and air pump.

    3) Remove and save the bolt and washer in center of the cargo tray.

    4) Remove cargo tray (You can leave the air pump in the tray because it's going to go back in the tray anyway).

NOTE: The kit comes with both a medium length bolt for the temporary spare tire that comes with the kit and a long hold down bolt for full size spare tire.

You now have 3 bolts to choose from: The one that held the cargo tray, one for the temporary spare, and the longest for the full size spare.

    5) Take the supplied screw driver, pull out the bit and reinstall back into the handle so the flat blade is pointing out.

    6) Take the medium length hold down bolt and slowly pry the speed nut (small chrome ring) off the black plastic handle. Save all parts. Take note of the direction of the speed nut, the "Domed" side is towards the washer. This is the same direction the speed nut will be reinstalled later.

    7) Drive out the bolt from the black handle using a small hammer (I used the supplied tire iron). Lightly tap on the top of the handle until the bolt is free.

    8) Taking the short bolt and washer that held in the cargo tray, and the black handle, it's washer and the speed nut, reassemble a hold down bolt assembly.

NOTE: After the two washers are on the black handle, remember that the domed side of the speed nut goes towards the washers.

Also, the short bolt does not have the same knurled shaft as the other bolts that came with the kit do, so you may want to put a dab of glue, rtv, etc. to hold the bolt inside the black handle. I was going to put a cotter pin through the hex in the handle above the bolt head to keep it together, but that seemed like work.

(You don't really need two washers, but I didn't want to waste parts or have them rattling around. So if you are even more lazy than me, you only have to tap out the original bolt out of the handle and leave the existing speed nut and washer on)

    9) Place the tire upside down, or deep side up.

    ********************************************************************************************
The kit comes with two small black plugs and a strap. There's no instructions for what to do with them so I put one of the round plugs in a hole that was in the right side of the interior panel ... [IMG]
... and the strap I'll use as a hold down inside the tire well.

    ******************************************************************************************

    10) The supplied instructions says to put the jack bag and air pump next to the tire and then reinstall the cargo shelf and be done.

You could save or toss the black liner, again I hate wasting parts so I tried laying the liner over the tire/pump/jack bag but that seemed kind of uneven and wonky. Member Novajeep1 stopped by, kinda raised an eyebrow at what I was doing and had a great suggestion ...

... pull out the jack bag and pump and put the liner directly over the tire ...
... Place the jack bag on top of the liner and put the old cargo tray next to it, that way there is support for the cargo shelf and you pick up an additional storage organizer ...

The cargo shelf fits on top without any issues and is fully supported.

And there it is, factory fresh and ready to go.

A special thanks goes out to Novajeep1 for the great idea ... although a beer would have been helpful too:).

    Side notes:
The molded foam blocks that hold the jack parts also have an indentation fort the gas filler tube, or you can leave the tube in the cargo tray.

I also got the "Heavy Duty" rubber tray liner.

It's an oem accessory, a good fit, and seems rugged enough.

How come a new car can't be ordered with a full size. Did you get a fixaflat kit instead of a tire. Or a donut. Who much coin is saved by Amazon and what's the link to the store.
    Thank you

I don't know if a new vehicle can be ordered with a spare tire as a stand alone option, our local dealer gave us a screaming good deal so we bought ours off the lot. I'd have to look again, but I think the new owners video dvd said that the supplied tire pump has fix-a-flat goo already inside the pump (?).

I don't know if Amazon was the cheapest place to buy the stuff, but for the few online vendors I did look at, Amazon was within a few dollars (higher on one item, lower on the other) and I had a gift card.

    Here's the links:

    Hope that helps.

I saw your posted ad I'm confused is it a real full size tire the photo shows an orange sticker on the rim. Most of the time orange stickers are on temp tires and rims even though it's not a donut. Is this a real full size tire that can be used if needed. I live in Vegas and a flat in the desert means 100+ miles on a will pop donut.

The kit fred used was a temp tire If I recall. Where we are its really all you need, unless your doing trails. I believe in the wave section he said his would be mostly highway, in which case the temp tire is fine.

Keep an eye on the forum, someone sells full size wheels from time to time.

I'll have 2 up for sale myself soon.

I purchased a new Doral 215/65R16 ASR and a new black steel rim from a Renegade Sport for a whopping $150.00. For a full size spare (only) it just seemed reasonable. Removed the molded styrofoam, etc and turned the new tire and rim upside down and used the existing bolt and washer to secure it.

I've got an aluminum tool box with a floor jack, Kobalt cordless impact wrench, torque wrench, and two "tire hangers" made out of two bolts which work perfectly. The aluminum tool box is 30"x13"x10" fits perfectly in the rear cargo area. It's ratchet strapped down using the existing tie down hooks.

Thanks Fred for the detailed write-up and the photos. Being new to the forum, I just found this today - a bit late, but appreciated nonetheless. I had my dealer include this tire kit in the sale and proceeded to do pretty much what you did when I got home with it.

The domed washer was toast by the time I got it off, but I happened to have a couple of rubber washers the right size to hold the steel washers (I too doubled them up) in place. After installation, I applied a gob of silicone seal to hold the head of the bolt in place when the assembly is removed. I too, couldn't figure out what the strap or plugs were for, so I plugged that same hole also - the strap is still on my workbench (I have since found that it is to secure the jack/tool bag, but I can't seem to access the lower hole to install it). I installed my spare up-side-down also - the extra storage space on top is nice.

I tossed the foam parts tray insert and put the semi-flexible cargo tray cover into stock in case I ever wish to use it ( I just don't want to have to move anything extra when accessing the storage cavity).

In ten years of driving my last vehicle, I never used the spare, so a temporary spare is OK with me, as long as I have something to limp in with if needed.

The rigid shelf is held in position with two cris-crossed heavy duty tarp straps, and usually has my bike carrier strapped down on top of that also, hopefully securing all loose items below the shelf from becoming projectiles in case of a mishap.

Again, thanks for the information (part number and all).

Thank you for the instructions! I ordered my spare from Amazon... and here are the details of the "install".

Unlike the photos I've seen, my wheel well is bare, and the mesh around the sides is saturated with oil or grease. I used some of the packing that came with the tire to place over it so it wouldn't get on anything, but I'm going to purchase a piece of outdoor carpet to place over the entire bottom.

The tire fits almost snug, not much room on either side when placed in the middle. This was the easy part.

The only "issue" I had was that part of the jack didn't fit in the intended spot... I had to make a cutout:

And now it fits. Did anyone else have trouble with this or did I put it in the wrong spot? (I couldn't find any other place where it would fit).

I moved the tire over as much to the right as I could get it but the jack bag still wouldn't fit. It WOULD had I taken it out of the bag, but I didn't want to do that.

I placed the Jeep Logo mat on top, and then the hard top and then the mat I bought to protect it. I used the strap to secure the jack bag to the side and bungee cords for the air pump (and a blanket). :) I should mention that the cargo tray did not fit (as it did for Fred)... it extended up past the support for the hard top, even without the Jeep Logo mat in there. I have a 2016 Limited 4x4, so maybe mine space is smaller than others (?).

I would have liked for everything to have fit in the tire well, but oh well.

And there you go... so easy a "52 year old woman with untreated carpal tunnel, no strength and no energy" can do it!

Can someone with a TH and full size spare, compare with these photos and post. Is TH full size spare form fit and function same?

Hey so that strap is to hold the jack container to the passenger side wall
Passenger side has a black sticky pad Which hids another hole. Pull up on that sticky pad to uncover where the second dashpin goes
