I've checked the official instructions from Rocky Road, and I've looked at two customer write-ups on the Rocky Road and the Daystar rocker panel protection.

I compare prices, the Daystars are available for $580 with free shipping. The Rocky Road "Super Sliders" are $490 after shipping is accounted-for. The $90 difference means that Rocky Road is not a slam-dunk.

    So comparing them...

    Rocky Road
    • "n" shape, C-channel pointed down, small but semi-sealed cavity between topside and body
    • use existing holes for plastic rocker trim but drilling them out with rubber grommets
    • does not entirely cover metal body/pinchseams
    • less material, presumably lighter weight
    • less modification to factory sheet metal, might be possible to remove and reinstall factory trim
    • installation looks relatively simple and requires no new tools

    Daystar
    • "u" shape, C-channel pointed up, holes drilled regularly through larger cavity so one can drain/flush
    • requires extensive drilling/riveting for new holes into the body under the doors, looks like approximately 50 holes
    • completely covers sheet metal and pinchseams
    • more material, presumably stronger
    • sheet metal must be removed, not possible to reverse, once installed they are not coming off
    • installation looks difficult and requires purchase of powered rivet gun

The difficulty of installation is not a terrible concern. Bigger concern is the protection provided, if less protection at the ends and at the pinch seam will pose a problem or not, and how weight will affect handling, and if either is more pronounced than the other in this regard. This is my wife's daily driver so we are trying to keep it as well-mannered on the road as possible. On the other hand she wants the model with the rails so that they can be stood upon.

Additionally in neither install did the drilled-out holes get any touchup paint or coating to prevent future rust. The number of holes drilled and how those holes are drilled affects that obviously. The climate we live in doesn't have particular rust problems, but no guarantee that the vehicle will always avoid road salt...
