It’s no secret that our renegades have rather small fuel tanks. After the lift, bigger tires, roof rack, exhaust, etc., I average about 20mpg on a good day with my 1.4 turbo 6 speed. Closer to 16mpg on the highway doing a little over 80mph. After barely making it into a rural gas station on fumes in the middle of nowhere, I got to thinking I need to carry extra gas when I’m way out in the bush or on long road trips. I’m curious if anyone else has mounted a jerry can on their roof rack. I have a 10L jerry can I plan to strap to my roof basket, in the rear corner, with some heavy duty tarp straps. I feel it’s safer in the event of an accident to have the gas can outside the vehicle rather than in the trunk. Wondering if there is a better way to do this, and if so how you did it. Keep in mind it’s only about a 2.5 gallon, not one of the big 5 gallon ones.

There are a number of can mounts that can be used on a roof rack... Jerry cans, roto packs & plastic cans can all be mounted via brackets on a roof rack but for me a 5 gallon plastic in the corner of my rack with a ratchet strap is simple and clean. You can get bracket for your can to mount it on the roof.

Appreciate the pointers! Yes I’m thinking if I’m not comfortable with the tarp straps, I’ll just get a 6’ light duty ratchet strap to hold it and use the tarp straps to stabilize it.
