To mud flap or not to mud flap?

I'm debating whether or not to try some WeatherTech mud flaps. The Renegade won't be seeing any extreme off roading but it would be nice to have the protection on gravel/muddy roads.

The issue I wonder about is with snow. We get a fair amount here and I'm worried about how it's going to pack into the wheel wells and potentially break the flaps.

Anybody with experience with mud flaps in Northern climes? Worth it or not?

I personally wouldn't run mud flaps. Like you, I can totally see how they would get packed with snow but even if you don't play on big rocks, it doesn't take much for them to get in the way and get torn off if they get caught in between a small rock or even a bush and your tire. Trust me, I see this happen on other vehicles all the time.
